Loma Linda University Health: New Patient Handbook and Healthcare Resource Guide

With grant support from Ardmore Institute of Health, Loma Linda University Health has developed two resources to advance the use of whole-food, plant-based nutrition for chronic disease treatment and prevention.

The Patient Handbook for Restorative Diet Recipes is designed to help patients treat chronic diseases through dietary changes. The handbook introduces nutrition's role in overall health and includes the dietary spectrum from the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. It offers recipes, practical tips for overcoming barriers like cost and time constraints, guidance on reading food labels and meal planning, and meal planners and grocery lists to help patients get started.

The Healthcare Resource Guide is designed to help hospital systems meet nutritional guidelines, emphasizing plant-based nutrition for hospitalized patients. Created by a task force team of physicians, nutritional services administrators, an executive chef, and registered dietitians at Loma Linda University Health, this guide can be immediately implemented into food service departments and can be adapted to food service departments in other healthcare facilities such as nursing homes, psychiatric facilities, and rehabilitation facilities.
